When should a word be capitalized and when should it just be treated like any other word in a sentence? Students have a lot of trouble with capitalization in their college essays because the rules for capitalizing certain academic disciplines, programs, majors, and degrees are not consistent. To help clear up the rules, remember these two simple tips: Your major should only be capitalized in three (3) specific cases: (1) it is a proper noun (like English or East Asian studies), (2) you are referring to the specific name of the department, school or course (like the School of Engineering, the Department of History, or Anthropology 101), (3) it is the first word in a sentence. In all other cases, do not capitalize. Degrees should only be capitalized when you refer to their full formal name, like Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, and so on. 3. Punctuation Problems Hyphens, apostrophes and quotations marks are some of the most commonly used â" and easily confused â" punctuations marks that come with their own sets of rules, so listen closely. Hyphens (-) are the dash-like punctuation marks that help you combine individual words into longer threads (like âdash-likeâ). When you are combining words to form an adjective, they should be hyphenated when they come BEFORE the thing they are describing, but not when they come AFTER. For example: I was a 17-year-old student, BUT: I was 17 years old. Apostrophes are used to make contractions, which combine two words (like youâre and Iâm) and possessives, which demonstrate ownership. They are almost never used to make plurals SO DONâT TO IT. For example: I like Beyoncéâs dance moves. Theyâre awesome. Double quotation marks are the American English standard for designating quotes. Periods and commas should go inside quotation marks. GetTickCount retrieves the number of milliseconds that have elapsed since the system was started, but the function only has the precision of 1 ms and may not always be accurate if the computer remains powered-up for long periods of time. The elapsed time is stored as a DWORD (32-bit) value. Therefore, the time will wrap around to zero if Windows is run continuously for 49.7 days. Adjustment Act and the National Reconstruction Administration, even allowed govâ⬠t to become too involved, resulting in Supreme Court legislation declaring them illegal and unconstitutional. His instituted loan and price-support programs which farmers became dependent upon, the Wagner Act as the overseer of labor-management relations, and a program to regulate the banking system and financial systems. In other words, he significantly changed the role of govâ⬠t in the ecomony and in society by granting govâ⬠t more control over them. After the New Deal and the Second Hundred Days were over, society held the expectation that the Pres. and the govâ⬠t. were responsible for correcting any or all problems that they had. Even so, Rooseveltâ⬠s radical actions had stabilized the economy and prevented economic collapse. Conservatives argue that Roosevelt undermined individualism and free enterprise, but really he simply saved the nation with his ideas and reforms. As such, this fascination with perception has caused my interests to branch out far beyond the arts, from loving neurology and environmental science, to devouring any and all types of literature, to exploring different cultures and religions. I have developed many different outlooks on life as a result, each one that much more developed, valuable, and essential to who I am as a person; and yet, I canââ¬â¢t help but see myself as an actor on stage, leading another little girl or boy with legs swinging in the front row to find his or her home.
